Shirley Marie "Chris" (Vigor) Yelvington

Shirley Marie “Chris” Yelvington   5/1930- Feb. 11, 2020. Chris was born in 1930 in Detroit to Raymond S. and Mabel M. Vigor. She attended Michigan State College, where she met her future husband, Robert L. Yelvington.  Chris is survived by 6 children, Shebar Windstone (née: Sharon), Kathy (Jeff) Oberg, Susan “Sue”, Robert A. “Rob” (Jennie), Bruce (Mary) & Lisa (Ken Milne); twelve grand-children, 8 great grand-children, and her cat, Holly. Chris was an avid cook who idolized Julia Child. She loved to subject her children to her latest cooking adventures & misadventures.  She enjoyed entertaining and preparing extravagant meals for all who attended her parties. Chris’ Chinese New Year’s event was the highlight of her extended family’s culinary year.  She spent countless hours reading and enjoying nearly all the published editions of Gourmet magazine and scores of cookbooks. Chris loved to quilt, each of her children received a quilt on their 50th birthday. She lovingly produced flannel pajamas each Christmas season for her children and later, grandchildren. She spent a number of years as a medical transcriptionist, eventually retiring from MSU. She enjoyed travel, particularly France, New York City and Chicago.  Other interests included organic gardening, Frank Lloyd Wright & the Pillsbury Doughboy. Chris looked forward to working as a volunteer tour guide for the Frank Lloyd Wright Open House Weekend in Oak Park, Il.  She was also active in the March of Dimes, the American Legion and the Friends of the Williamston Library. The Yelvington family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff at Home Sweet Home Assisted Living facility in Haslett and also to Grace Hospice. Their care and concern for her comfort during her final days on earth did not go unnoticed by the family. There will be no services held.  Anyone wishing to make a donation in her name, please make it to the March of Dimes.
