Ruby Jewel McKenzie, age 81, of Ypsilanti, was called home by the Lord, Monday, May 30, 2022. She was surround by family as she transitioned into her new life. Ruby began her journey here on earth as the sixth of eleven children to her parents Bert and Lucille (Foster) Pelphery, on February 15, 1941, at home in Staffordsville, Kentucky. On March 25, 1961 she married Douglas Wade McKenzie. A few years later they would travel north and make Ypsilanti home. She was a housewife in the early years but she eventually worked and retired from the Ypsilanti Ford plant. She attended Stoney Creek Freewill Baptist Church, where she loved to sing and perform on the alter, and at home, singing her grandchildren to sleep. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Ypsilanti. They opened their home to many people who needed a place to stay, until they were able to get back on their feet. Many a summer night was spent on the porch, swinging while conversing with family and friends. She loved working in the yard, anything flower related, but roses were her favorite. She also enjoyed cooking, especially during the holidays for large family gatherings. She is survived by one son, Wade McKenzie of Belleville; two daughters, Debbie (Stacy) McNaughton of Ypsilanti, and Anita (Dan) Tardy of Saline; eight grandchildren, Melissa, Brandi, Stacy Jr., Tiffany, John, Jonathon, Jordan and Heather; six great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Elijah, Auron, Landon, Isabella and Blake; two brothers, Allen and Tommy; four sisters, Lennie, Phyllis, Barbara and Brenda;as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both her parents, Bert and Lucille; husband, Douglas; son, James Allen; brother, Marvin; sisters, Lakie, Fannie and Joyce. She has been cremated in accordance with her wishes. A celebration of life will be held in the near future.
