Obituary

Karen Jean (Swanston) Miller passed away on June 30, 2021 at Hillsdale Hospital.  She was born on December 7, 1935 in Tecumseh, Michigan, to Thomas and Eunice (Harwood) Swanston.  On September 17, 1955 she married Gerald “Jerry” Miller of Saline and he survives. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1954 and was proud to call her classmates life-long friends. She went on to work at Herrick Memorial Hospital in Tecumseh, and L & I Leasing in Britton before she and Jerry built Miller’s Main Stop in Reading.  Karen enjoyed working alongside her family for well over a decade.  After the business was sold she joined the Medical Records Department at Hillsdale Hospital. Karen was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church and its Women’s Club.  She loved spending time with the Kid’s Club, working at church dinners, and Sunday morning coffee time. Karen was also a member of the Wenona Chaper Eastern Star, Reading Shakespeare Club and was a former member of Tecumseh Jaycee Auxiliary. She is survived by three daughters, Terri (Brian) Draper of Hillsdale, Kathy (Jim) Bondsteel of Hillsdale, and Beth (Randy) Rowley of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Matt (Amanda) Draper, Chris (Nicole) Bondsteel, Amy (Bryan Brandt) Bondsteel, and Scott Rowley; six great grandchildren, Andrew, Karly, Trey, Mia, Maddex and Olivia; sister, Sally Shafer; sister-in-law, Marilyn Swanston; cousins, nieces, nephews and many cherished friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Arthur and Ruth Miller; infant daughter, Debbie; brother, Bill Swanston; and brother-in-law, Paul Shafer. Karen loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren whole heartedly.  Attending their sporting competitions, birthday parties, graduations, and other events made her ever radiant smile even brighter.  She truly loved gathering with friends and family.  In her honor, a memorial celebration will be held Sunday, August 1, 2021 from 1-5 p.m. at the home of Brian and Terri Draper.  The family invites you to come and share a hug, a story, a laugh, and fellowship honoring Karen’s life. According to her wishes cremation has taken placeIn lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shriner Children’s Hospital, Hillsdale Hospital, or Jonesville United Methodist Church.
