Eugene R. Lewandowski of Tecumseh passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side at 11:20 pm on March 22nd, 2020. Gene was born on Groundhog Day, February 2nd 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to John and Rose (Ciesielski) Lewandowski. He grew up and spent his childhood in Dearborn, Michigan. After graduating from Fordson High School in 1947, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952. He was combat crew member on B-29s. Gene married Shirley Leeman on June 25th, 1955 in Dearborn, Michigan. She preceded him in death on June 22nd, 2000. Also preceded in death were his brothers Leonard and Arthur. Gene graduated from Detroit Institute of Technology in 1961 with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering. Gene was a project engineer, managing projects for several construction companies that built buildings for G.M., Chrysler, and several schools, the last in the area being Addison Middle School and for Chelsea School District. He retired from construction in 1980. He rehired to the U.S.P.S. in Wayne, Michigan; he retired in 1991. He was a member of the Saint Elizabeth Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. In early family life, he was deeply involved in scouting with his sons. Surviving are his five children, Richard of Livonia, Joseph and wife, Darlene, of Canton, Dave and wife, Marcia, of Bellaire, John and wife, Sheri, of Commerce Township, and Stacy of Tecumseh. Also surviving is his sister Donna (John) Schmidlin of Allenton, Michigan.Gene was the devoted grandfather of thirteen grandchildren: Jeff (Season), Matt (Samantha), Nicole, Sara, Jenna (Nick) , Christopher, Rachel (Andy), Naomi, Katrina, Nicholas, Anne, Sydney, and Isabel. He had a special fondness for Isabel who he helped raise. He was a great grandfather to five: Scarlett, Nolan, Bella, Jepson, and Stella. The sixth child is due later this year. Gene loved garage sales and striking up conversations with the people he would meet. He loved playing the harmonica and singing with his grandkids. He enjoyed new projects and the adventures they would bring. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately for family only, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh with Rev. Fr. Dan Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery where military honors will be performed by Tecumseh American Legion & VFW.
