Dorothy Flager Obituary

Dorothy May Flager, 92, joined her fellow angels on Wednesday March 8th 2023 at her home in Onsted under hospice care and after battling cancer – the only struggle she was unable to overcome. A church service celebrating her life will be held Saturday March 25th, 2023 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church 11151 US12 Brooklyn, Michigan at 11AM. Doors to the church will open at 9:30AM to allow those attending to share Dorothy memories with her loved ones. Dorothy was born on March 19, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to Lester and Edna Schiel. She was one of four children that grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Brooklyn High School where she met her loving husband of seventy-three plus years – Doug Flager. They raised two of their own children – Bob and Debi and became defacto parents and/or grandparents to many more along the way. Though Dorothy worked for and retired from Brooklyn Products after many years – those that know her know you could never truly get her to stop working: diligently gardening, hanging the laundry on the line outside year round, shoveling snow, chasing her grandsons and later her great granddaughters, working a number of years for an auctioneer post “retirement” in Sturgis, Michigan and always volunteering to lend a hand wherever it was needed for whatever project needed to be done. It was often said she often did more in the time before everyone else was awake than they might accomplish throughout their whole day. She will forever be remembered for her Mickey Mouse watches, her Coca-Cola collection, her distaste for wearing shoes and her endless supply of overhauls but most importantly as a thoughtful and caring friend, sibling, mom and/or “Grams” who always took the time and effort to make each and every family get together more special than the last. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Don and his wife Leta Schiel, sister-in-law Joann Schiel (Rich), brother-in-law Roy Roark (Judy), nephew Rick Schiel (Darcy) and son-in-law Bob Wilson (Debi). She is survived by her son and his wife, her daughter, five grandsons, four great granddaughters, extended family and countless others who she watched over. Her passing leaves an unfillable void in the world but thankfully she left us a perfect example of how to lead a life fulfilled. She will be sorely missed by all. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Henry Ford Jackson Hospice in Dorothy’s name.
