Thomas Van Eck Obituary

Thomas Earl Van Eck, born May 31, 1940 in Kalamazoo, died April 28, 2018 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.. He was the eldest son of the late John W Van Eck, Postmaster of SW Michigan, and his late wife Lucile Leonora (Lotz) Van Eck, formerly of Rose Street in Kalamazoo.  Tom was an Army veteran and an avid collector of Tigers, Lions and WMU sport memorabilia. He was employed by the Kalamazoo County Health Department as a food inspector and refereed City League baseball for many years. He was a member of Rotary and Kiwanis and a tournament bowler. After his retirement he resided at Crossroads Village in Portage, where he will be missed by his many friends.  He is survived by his brother Neal A (Susan Smith) Van Eck, 6 nieces and nephews, cousins Judith Hoy, Barbara De Hamer, Peggy Kennedy, Paul Swope, John Swope, Robbie Swope, Susan Hubert and others, He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Emily Jane Van Eck.  There will be no viewing. Graveside service is scheduled for Thursday, May 17 at 2:30 PM at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta MI 49012. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to Disabled American Veterans of Michigan, 17779 East 14 Mile Road, Fraser MI 49026.
