Lucille Rose (Fillmore) McNaughton
September 5, 1933—February 21, 2018
Lucille R McNaughton (age 84) passed away peacefully in her sleep soon after her daughters and siblings shared their final words of love and farewell. She was preceded in death by her parents Dale Howard Fillmore and Beatrice Isabelle Johnson, her sister Marge Murphy, and niece Marti Begly. She is survived and will be missed by daughters Jennifer (Bernie) Nabozny, Katy Hayes, and Elizabeth McNaughton; grandchildren Jesse McNaughton, Chelsea Nabozny, Ben Nabozny, Amber Bothne, Seth Katapady, Jake Hayes, and Arielle Hayes; her sister Laura Ferns and brother Howard (Jan) Fillmore and her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lucille was born in Traverse City, MI and raised in Dearborn, MI. She was a teacher and a traveler. She held 3 master’s degrees in various areas of education as well as a PhD in Education--Learning Styles. Always the passionate educator, she determinedly advocated for her students, trying methods “outside the box” to help her students succeed. Her career in education spanned close to 50 years including most grades from Kindergarten through remedial reading at Macomb Community College. She loved the outdoors and hiked up numerous mountains with Pikes Peak in CO being the one most mentioned. Like her mother, she loved learning and experiencing new people and places and traveled all over the United States as well as to Indonesia, Russia, England, Scotland, Japan among other places, sometimes on Fulbright Scholarships or teacher exchange programs. Lucille had a big heart and was always there to listen when someone needed an ear. She was genuinely interested in the person before her. She was a huge proponent of Social Justice and worked to bring about equity in the world. She loved Classical Music and was an accomplished pianist as well as enjoying singing with the BUC choir. She challenged herself by participating in Toastmasters and was always ready to learn something new. She tenaciously lived her life to the fullest. We will be celebrating Lucille’s life Sunday March 11, 2018 at Unity Church of Jackson 3385 Miles Rd. Jackson, MI 49201. Service at 4:00 pm to be followed by a gathering in the social hall to share food, fellowship, and stories.
