Hallie Tucker Obituary

Hallie Faye (Maxwell) Tucker, 92, of Adrian, MI, awoke from an earthly slumber in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus on the morning of Saturday, June 5, 2021.  Born in Elk City, OK, on February 28, 1929,  this farm girl grew up 250 miles away in Haskell County on Beaver Mountain.  Due to the Great Depression, hard work was a way of life for the Maxwell clan.  Still, Faye reminisced about many fond memories on her daddy’s small homestead, such as crowing roosters, singing while milking cows, momma’s tasty cooking (i.e. watermelon rind jelly, poke salad seasoned with bacon fat, etc.) and her favorite horse, Spot. She met her future husband as a young teenager.  Her father noticed a similar aged boy walking down the hot, dusty mountain road and stopped their horse and wagon to offer him a ride.  On June 20, 1947, nearly 11 months after he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy, she married WWII veteran, James D. Tucker in Stigler, OK. Shortly thereafter, J.D. brought his ‘Lil Gal’ to Adrian, MI and established permanent roots.  Faye took a job downtown at Kline’s Department Store where she delighted in helping ladies select fashionable clothes and accessories.  She left the retailer to focus on being a devoted wife, a loving mother of three energetic boys, gardening/canning, numerous home-based hobbies and an occasional game of Rook with family.  Affectionately accused as being nocturnal, she completed many chores after everyone went to bed including keeping in touch with loved ones back home, penning long letters or talking to relatives by phone well past midnight.  Faye loved babies and babysitting, especially her grandchildren/great grandchildren.  Both she and J.D. were members of Bethany Assembly of God church in Adrian where she often served in the nursery and managed cradle roll records.   She thoroughly enjoyed gospel music, occasionally playing the piano or accordion during Sunday services, and to her credit, totally by ear, having had no lessons.  In fact, she would often unwind at home at the keyboard singing traditional worship hymns to God for hours at a sitting. Faye was preceded in death by her loving “Okie” husband of 68 years.  She is survived by three sons, Lanny (Barbara) of Scottsville, NY, Timothy of Ann Arbor, MI, and Chris (Melissa) Tucker of Grove City, OH; sister Shirley (Abe) Ridgeway of Tulsa, OK, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many extended family, all of whom she loved very much.  She is preceded in death by parents, M.T. and Johnnie Maxwell, sister, Fearl Dean Flud, brothers Glen and Kenneth Maxwell and granddaughter Autumn Tucker. Faye loved and served the Lord since her youth and nurtured that personal relationship through prayer and reading Scripture.  By God’s grace, her earthly existence can be summed up by this verse penned by the apostle Paul near the end of his natural life:   “I have fought the good fight.  I have finished the race.  I have kept the faith.”  2 Timothy 4:7 Friends and family may visit Friday, July 16 from 6 – 7:00 p.m. with a brief memorial service at 7:00 p.m. at Purse Funeral Home, 2959 N. Adrian Hwy (WATCH LIVE LINK)  A private burial will occur at Crane Cemetery (U.S. 223 & Ogden Highway) at a later time. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Dr. Paul Gietzen (Adrian) for many years of professional service, all caregivers at the Grove City, OH StoryPoint “Premier Assisted Living” (i.e. Dawn, Kaitlyn, Brittany and many others), and, Julie’s incredible team with Capital City Hospice (Columbus, OH) for their compassionate support. In lieu of flowers, Faye requested donations be made in her memory to the county ‘meals on wheels’ program.  Donations will be accepted at the memorial service.  Checks, made payable to ‘Lenawee Department on Aging’ can also be mailed to:  Lenawee Department on Aging, Home Delivered Meals, 1040 S.
