Frederick Norton Filer, Jr.

Frederick Norton Filer, Jr., age 91, of San Diego, CA, formerly of Tecumseh, MI, passed away, September 26, 2017, at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, CA.  He was born April 5, 1926 in Troy (Oakland Country), Michigan, the son of Frederick Norton & Emma Melissa (Manser) Filer, Sr.  Fred graduated from Dearborn High School Dearborn, MI in 1944.  He was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army and spent two years from August 1944 to July 1946 serving his country during WWII.    Of that time, eleven months were in European war areas  France, Germany, Austria).  He received two Bronze Star Medals  (for meritorious achievement in connection with operations against an opposing armed force) as well as a Good Conduct Medal.   He became a meat cutter manager after getting out of the Army from 1946-1962.  In 1962 he went to work for Henry Ford Community College  where he worked in the Maintenance Department as a Maintenance Engineer from 1962-1986.  He retired in June of 1986.  He married Leah Jane Weinzierl of Berkley, MI on November 16, 1946.  They were married over 62 years when Leah died in April 2009.  Fred is survived by two children.  Janet L. (Filer) Thompson (husband James Thompson) of Arizona and Rebecca L. (Filer) Waymon of San Diego, CA,  3 grandsons:  Jesse J Thompson (wife Tammy Thompson) of Almont, MI, Jason A. Thompson (wife Jennifer Thompson) of Almont, MI and Christopher D. Waymon of Boston, MA., 6 great-grandchildren:  Alex, Aaron, Freddy and Julia Thompson of Almont, MI also Zack and Jacob Thompson of Almont, MI.  Fred went to San Diego, CA. to live with his daughter Rebecca (Becky) in October 2012.   He enjoyed attending church services in Tecumseh, MI at the Tecumseh Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Brian Jones.  He faithfully attended services in San Diego at Shadow Mountain Community Church with Dr. David Jeremiah (Pastor).  Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 7, 2017, at the Tecumseh Missionary Baptist Church, 407, S. Occidental Hwy, Tecumseh, MI, with Pastor Brian Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens with Military Honors performed by the Michigan Army National Guard.  Visitation will be on Friday, October 6, 2017, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at J.
